It’s a 3 bc I feel like I actually understand a myth better than any others before, but it would have been a 2 since this kind of narrative is just not for me. Every character could have been the same for me and it felt like it was non stop exposition, even though I feel like that’s just the nature of these myths. I wasn’t dazzled by the story or by the heroics or the characters, it was just a really long Wikipedia read for me

 Όταν διάβασα το Τραγούδι του Αχιλλέα, είχα εντυπωσιαστεί από τη γραφή της Madeline Miller και την αγάπη της για την ελληνική μυθολογία. Βλέποντας ότι είχε γράψει κι άλλο βιβλίο, ήξερα ότι έπρεπε να το διαβάσω. Το τελείωσα μέσα σε μία ημέρα και όσο και να έλεγα στον εαυτό μου να το αφήσει κάτω, απλά δε μπορούσα να σταματήσω την ανάγνωση διότι ήμουν ήδη χαμένη στις σελίδες του.

Το βιβλίο όπως φαίνεται από τον τίτλο, ασχολείται με την Κίρκη, τη γνωστή μάγισσα από την Οδύσσεια. Η Κίρκη πρόκειται για μία Νύμφη, η οποία αντιμετώπιζε συνεχώς την περιφρόνηση από την οικογένειά της αλλά και από τους άλλους θεούς. Μέσα από το βιβλίο, αφηγείται τη ζωή της, περιγράφοντας στον αναγνώστη όλα όσα έζησε η ίδια και τη σημάδευσαν για πολλούς αιώνες.

Όσο ξεδιπλώνονται οι διάφορες πτυχές της ζωής της, παρατηρείται η εξέλιξη της Κίρκης. Εξελίσσεται και μαθαίνει πώς μπορεί να επιβιώσει, ανακαλύπτει διάφορα κομμάτια του εαυτού της, αποκτά δική της βούληση και δεν ανέχεται να υποταχθεί σε κανέναν. Καθώς διάβαζα το βιβλίο, μού προκάλεσε έντονα συναισθήματα και μπορούσα να καταλάβω το πώς ένιωθε η Κίρκη σε διάφορες καταστάσεις. 

Για παράδειγμα, όταν ο Τηλέγονος ήθελε να φύγει από το νησί, μπορούσα να νιώσω τον πανικό και τον φόβο της, σαν να ήταν δικός μου γιος.

  Χαιρόμουν, θύμωνα και αγωνιούσα μαζί της ενώ παράλληλα έμπαινα σε σκέψεις για το αν οι πράξεις της ήταν σωστές ή όχι. Δεν είναι τέλεια, αλλά μέσα από τις δυσκολίες γίνεται πιο δυναμική και μέχρι το τέλος του βιβλίου, ο χαρακτήρας της δεν είναι ίδιος όπως στην αρχή.

Η γραφή της Miller είναι για ακόμη μια φορά λυρική, σε σαγηνεύει σαν μια Σειρήνα και σε παρασέρνει, χωρίς να μπορείς να βουλώσεις τα αυτιά σου για να μην παρασυρθείς. Φαίνεται η έρευνά της και χειρίζεται την ελληνική μυθολογία με σεβασμό και αγάπη (μπορώ να πω ότι έμαθα αρκετές νέες πληροφορίες που δεν τις ήξερα). Σε ταξιδεύει στην Αία, το νησί στο οποίο ζει η Κίρκη, δημιουργώντας ένα «μαγικό» κλίμα με τις περιγραφές και τις διάφορες εικόνες και κάνει τον αναγνώστη να αισθάνεται ότι βρίσκεται εκεί μαζί με την Κίρκη και τα ζώα της.

Αυτό που στέρησε το πεντάρι είναι ότι κάποια σημεία στο δεύτερο μέρος του βιβλίου θα μπορούσαν να είχαν παραλειφθεί, καθώς έκαναν την πλοκή κάπως ανιαρή κι επαναλαμβανόμενη. Ωστόσο το βιβλίο παρέμεινε ωραίο κι εξακολουθούσα να το διαβάζω δίχως να χάνω το ενδιαφέρον μου.

Αν δεν έχετε διαβάσει το βιβλίο, σας προτρέπω να το κάνετε. Η Miller έχει γίνει μία από τις αγαπημένες μου συγγραφείς και δε βλέπω την ώρα να με «μαγέψει» με το επόμενο της βιβλίο.
