I found this play an intriguing adaptation of Sophocles' 'Antigone' with interweaving of direct and indirect elements of metatheatre and the portrayal of Creon desiring to save his niece Antigone from death.

The key theme of childhood and introduction of the Nurse brings a deeper reflection upon Antigone's character and develops a sense of closeness and intimacy in their strong relationship. Antigone is a powerful voice of youth speaking her own mind and fighting for her beliefs.
Anouilh's inclusion of the scene between Haemon and Antigone particularly struck me - with Antigone saying her final goodbyes to Haemon knowing she is going to die. "Forgive me for hurting you, my darling - because I can never marry you."

The emotional tension of the fast-paced scene between Antigone and Creon could be argued to parallel the French Resistance - "[Critics] interpreted Antigone as a play with a meaning for a country suffering under alien rule".

Quotes:
"Life's not what you think. It's like water - the young let it slip through their fingers without thinking. Shut your hands, Antigone, shut them tight and hold it back"

"Life's a book you enjoy, a child playing round your feet, a tool that fits into your hand, a bench outside your house to rest on in the evening."

Randomly pulled this out of the little free library as I was leaving Circe because I was in a Greek mood, and ending up really enjoying it. I think I may keep it. I had a student edition, and appreciated all the background and plot synopsis before I actually read the play.
