Antigone

Classifying and reviewing this play is extremely difficult! I love Antigone and I study France during the Second World War, so the combination of the two is a dream come true for me. Anouilh's take on the play is harsh, effective, and lyrical, and the translation is nothing short of beautiful. I've paired my reading with listening to his audiobook in French, and the combination has been great. A gorgeous meditation on tragedy, inevitability, politics, and power.

I began to write down each line that I felt mattered a lot to me. It was a short time before I realized I would just copy the entire play.

I read it in French I really liked it it’s a peaceful tragedy.

“I spit on your happiness! I spit on your idea of life--that life that must go on, come what may. You are all like dogs that lick everything they smell. You with your promise of a humdrum happiness--provided a person doesn't ask much of life. I want everything of life, I do, and I want it now! I want it total, complete: otherwise, I reject it! I will not be moderate. I will not be satisfied with the bit of cake you offer me if I promise to be a good little girl. I want to be sure of everything this very day; sure that everything will be as beautiful as when I was a little girl. If not, I want to die!”

‘’And those who have survived will now begin quietly to forget the dead. They won’t remember who was who or which was which. It is all over. Antigone is calm tonight. She has played her part. (Three guards enter and begin to play cards.) A great melancholy wave of unrest peace now settles down upon Thebes, upon the empty palace, upon Creon, who can now begin to long for his own death. Only the guards are left, and none of this matters to them. It's no skin off their noses. They go on playing cards.’’
