This is an absurd queer melodrama that was undeniably written for queer people, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's one of those books that I didn't always like as I read it, but it has stayed in my head since I finished reading. Davis lays bare the tension and frivolity of performing certain kinds of contemporary queerness, with pithy, startling funny writing. Dykette is filled with hyper-specific queer cultural references, shock-factor lesbian drama, rampant insecurity, and just the right amount of queer discourse.

Thanks to Henry Holt/Macmillan & the author for the advanced copy! This review reflects my unbiased opinion.

This is a VERY hard book to rate. I really enjoyed it and read it very fast. Part of me loved this book and part of me was disgusted by it. Definitely check trigger warnings before reading! But what I will say is that the writing is fantastic and it's a very easy book to read, it goes fast and I think the pacing is great. This is impressive espy considering that the book takes place in one setting and over a very short period of time (exactly 10 days, each chapter is a day).

This is a DNF for me.

It’s got that Melissa Broder absurdity that I love but absolutely no drive behind the plot. I have never once said this in my life but this book is too heavy on vibes.

This feels like reading the dream journal of someone with adhd who took a really great edible. Which is certainly a vibe just not *my* vibe. It kinda felt like I dropped acid and went to see an uncanny version of the Barbie movie. Which, again, IS a selling point. I’m so conflicted on this DNF because I desperately want to be cool enough to get it.

You know how it feels to walk into a place and instantly know you’re not cool enough to be there? That’s how I felt reading it and I’m a Leo, I can’t handle feeling like a loser. So, alas, it’s just not for me.

I couldn’t put this book down because I wanted it to be over so badly. If you want to read something that talks down to you like that one girl at the party who miraculously knows more than anybody about everything and keeps talking about her tits, have at it. Beware the livestream scene.

Thank you netgalley and Macmillan for an ALC of this book.

Unfortunately I do not think I was the correct audience for this book. I did not enjoy plot or writing at all.

I thought the narrator did a great job, but the last 30% of this book had me literally shaking.

Maybe I "don't get it" but wow. This wasn't it for me.

I have never been more excited to see discourse over a book than I was with this read! If you love messy, flawed characters, toxic relationships, and biting social satire, I would highly recommend this to you. It's an addictive read, even when the content gets off-putting. Be warned, it's the kind of book you finish and you aren't sure you if you like it or hate it but you know it'll stick with you for a long time.

Thank you Netgalley for providing a digital ARC.
