I can understand why children find this book exciting, but it's just not my cup of tea. I should have read it when I was a child, perhaps.

My 5 yr old loved the adventure and really got the lessons learned. The kids' slang is very 1950s English, but adds to the charm for me.
There are so many things problematic with this book that it is best not to dwell on them as otherwise, you'll be there all day. So moving swiftly on, there is still something magical about this book (I first read it aged eight I think). Blyton does manage to make you feel as enthusiastic about exploring Kirrin Island as the Famous Five are. It's escapist nonsense and, sometimes, there really is no harm in that.
That said I would be weary about giving this to young girls. Girls aren't exactly promoted as being brave... in fact, we repeatedly told that they're the opposite.

Love these books even now when I m older. They are so thrilling. Great childrens books. Truly recommend.
Enid Blyton is such a fun author! For such a short book, it is surprising that she manages to achieve so much. However, she clearly paints Kirrin Cottage, Island, and Castle with wonder, and George's character development is rewarding and enjoyable.
Despite having read this many times before, I still felt the tension on the Island, and could share in the Children's excitement. I also LOVE Tim. But who doesn't?
I can't wait to re-read the rest of the series!

read the whole series as a child a long time ago.
read it again last night and was surprised on how short and how simplistic the story line is, but still a fun read.

Ik herinner me nog hoe ik als klein meisje naar bed werd gebracht door mijn vader. Voor mij het leukste moment van de dag. negen van de tien keer betekende dat dat ik weer voorgelezen zou worden uit een boek van De Vijf! Mijn vader gebruikte daarbij voor elk karakter een ander stemmetje en ik heb me soms gevoeld alsof ik midden in de boeken zat en zelf meedeed aan het verhaal. Onder andere uit deze serie bestond mijn jeugd en tot op de dag van vandaag blijft dit mijn favoriete kinderboekenserie naast Wipneus&Pim. Ik was dan ook super enthousiast toen Inge voorstelde om de boeken met de #samenlezenwe club te lezen. En wat heb ik genoten zeg.
Het voelt alsof je 50 jaar terug de tijd in gaat als je start in deel 1 van De Vijf. Als kind valt het je niet zo op, maar nu als volwassene is de schrijfstijl zo lekker ouderwets. Allerlei woorden worden gebruikt die veel kinderen tegenwoordig niet eens meer kennen. Wat nog meer niet opviel, was George. George was alleen maar heel stoer, heel koppig en niet bepaald meisjes achtig. Als je nagaat uit welk jaartal dit boek oorspronkelijk komt, is dit Enid behoorlijk vooruitstrevend door te schrijven over een meisje dat liever een jongen wil zijn. Wat me ook pas nu opvalt, is hoe bizar het eigenlijk is om je kinderen naar een oom en tante te sturen die ze nog nooit hebben gezien! Dat zou niemand in deze tijd nog doen, laat staan ze dan ook nog alleen op een eiland laten overnachten........ Totaal niet van deze tijd en zelfs voor die tijd is het wel wat vergezocht. Maar goed, dat is het mooie van fictie, en gelukkig mag je daarbij je fantasie gebruiken. welk twaalfjarig kind wil zoiets nu niet meemaken? Ik vroeger in elk geval wel, wat voor watje ik dan ook mocht zijn.
Het boekje is maar 160 pagina's, je leest er lekker vlot doorheen. Het zit vol met avontuur, vriendschap, kwesties over vertrouwen, delen, eerlijkheid en het zoeken naar je identiteit en zelfs nu heb ik elke pagina op het puntje van mijn stoel gezeten en kon ik niet stoppen met lezen.
Voor de mensen die graag een audioboek luisteren, de Engelse versie van Jay Francis wordt aangeraden, die schijnt erg goed en ook grappig te zijn!
Oja, een ander ding dat me nog opviel is dat de hond niet op elke cover of in elke serie dezelfde kleur is. Soms is hij meer bruin, soms meer geel en dan weer zwart met wit, dat is natuurlijk wel een beetje jammer, maar doet niet af aan de pret om deze serie eindelijk weer te lezen!
Ik kan ook deze keer gewoon niet anders dan 5 sterren geven aan De Vijf en het gestrande goudschip! Fantastisch boek, op niveau (zeker als je zelf nog maar 12 bent), vol met spanning en avontuur en hele leuke karakters (En natuurlijk een fantastische hond!!!)

What a nostalgia trip! It's been a while since I've read anything of hers. I did grow up reading her books, esp. the Five Find-Outers series, since they feature such headstrong kids having wild adventures. This book is true to formula and it's fun to know that it's a formula that still works.
Wonderfully narrated by Jan Francis.
I read most of the Famous Five books as a child, but I did not remember this one.
