I Know why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

emotional inspiring reflective medium-paced

The beginnings of a legendary life. Angelou’s experiences are a perfect snapshot of life in a particular time and place(s) for a young black girl. It was quite a moving experience listening to her narrate her own story.

my first ~serious~ book on my reading for fun journey and it took me a long time. it was beautiful and heavy and important, but it wasn’t easy/fun/beach reading. i’m glad to have read this classic and to know more about her story.

I love her writing style, and when she writes a quotable line it is the most quotable line. It took too long to get off the ground. I understand that the slower pace was meant to contrast the two paces of the places she lived, but that doesn’t make it any more enjoyable to read.
