”Perhaps love is best left as a fallow field.”
I’ve definitely not lived my life alone, abandoned by everyone I’ve ever cared about, left to fend for myself in every way imaginable, but I can totally sympathize with the sentiment. Why give love a chance when all it’s ever brought you is heartache and despair and abandonment. The journey that we are taken on, from that dark and lonely place to one of trust and love and comfort, makes for a heartbreaking and heartwarming story. And oh man, the lush descriptive language alone makes this book well worth the read. There were several times where I had to just pause and savor Owens’ masterful use of language. Was everything in the book perfect? Lord no. But I was taken in by it just the same. And any book that has me wiping away tears, that can make me feel joy and anger and sorrow and frustration, can’t be all that bad.
