gay has a humor infused in her writing that i very much enjoyed. she also has the talent of intensity when the topic calls for it. these essays all build upon the idea that humans are flawed and being a bad feminist is better that not being a feminist at all. overall, an interesting read even if it felt superficial at times.

Feeling very ambiguous about this book. Really enjoyed the idea of the Bad Feminist and how being the perfect feminist is a myth, another set of high expectations placed on women. A big portion of the essays discuss pop culture and references things from 2013 that might be a bit outdated (i.e. Fifty Shades of Grey). I did enjoy when she dissected things i had read/seen (The Help, Twilight, Hunger Games) but was very uninterested when it concerned works I had not consumed (there were a lot of them).
Although these essays were classed as discussing feminism there was no theoretical analysis. Most of the ideas I was already aware of and the essays remained quite superficial in their analysis of race, class, gender, etc. and how they intersect. Indeed, the whole book was very binary in the way it conceptualised gender (i.e. men and women) without reference for the most part to gender identities that exist elsewhere on the spectrum and how that fits into/should feature in feminist thought.

Essays I liked: Typical First Year Professor; Beyond the Struggle Narrative
Essays I disliked: Girls, Girls, Girls; Garish, Glorious Spectacles

Overall, very on and off. I speed read some essays whilst others i really had to slog through because I was so bored. Would recommend this for people who are unfamiliar with feminism and want a light introduction to it.

I love Roxane Gay so much, but continue to not QUITE have my expectations matched when I read her books (other than Hunger, which was fantastic). I enjoyed some of these essays more than others, and hunger for smart analysis of pop culture, but it wasn't the page-turner I had hoped for.

"My favorite definition of “feminist” is one offered by Su, an Australian woman who, when interviewed for Kathy Bail’s 1996 anthology DIY Feminism, said feminists are “just women who don’t want to be treated like shit.”

"I am a bad feminist. I would rather be a bad feminist than no feminist at all."

Essays on different topics: her self, scrabble, violence, rap, race, pop culture, books, movies, the hunger games, girls, fifty shades of grays and so on

I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of things but that's okay, I just love the fact that she is a women, she has voice and it's out there.

I really enjoyed the first third of the book but the essays became boring. There was an entire essay about a tv show I have never heard of. I read about half and that’s enough for me. Maybe that makes me a bad feminist for not enjoying a book on feminist essays but I’m ok with that.

Those essays seemed too personal for me, I couldn’t relate to most of them. However, I really loved Gay’s writing style.
