Best sci-fi/fantasy author right now as far as I'm concerned. Favorites from this collection: "How Inyang Got Her Wings," "Spider the Artist," "Tumaki," "The Palm Tree Bandit."

I love well written short stories, and I love fantasy sci fi and this author is so good at both. I just wish there were more!

very readable and enjoyable collection of stories. especially good if you've read her novels - several of the stories are set in those worlds or give background/add to those stories.

I received a copy of this book via a FirstReads giveaway. I was intrigued by the write-up and am glad I got a chance to read this one. Normally, sci-fi/fantasy isn't my genre of choice but every now and then I enjoy trying something different. I was not disappointed with this short story collection which blends myths, legends, and reality to take the reader on magical rides. Most of the stories are set in modern or future Africa and skillfully weave fact and fiction together. The author provides short write-ups about each story -- I ended up reading them after I finished each story since that always enhances the reading experience for me. It's hard to say which story was my favorite but I'd put "Kabu Kabu," "Asunder," "Tumaki," and "The Palm Tree Bandit" at the top of the list. Several of the stories had sly humor -- "Long Juju Man" jumps to mind immediately as I hear the trickster gleefully laughing throughout the tale -- or evoked an emotional response. The humorous and melancholy offerings were equally appealing and provided a nice mix for this unique collection. I'm glad I got a chance to try out a new author and would be interested in reading more of her inventive tales in the future. Thanks to First Reads for introducing me to another new author!
