Really this is more like 3.5 stars. Quick read, good suspense, nice plot twists.
I had figured out the "who" early on, but this one kept me guessing throughout, constantly reassessing and wondering if I'd been wrong. This was fast paced and exactly what I look for in a thriller.
Lisa Gardner is one of a very few group of authors whose career I have literally followed since the first novel was released. With most authors I love, I came late to the party (which is nice; I love finding a new favorite author and then seeing that they have five or six books that I haven't read yet). But no, I bought her first novel on a whim and immediately fell in love.
But while her career has been built on thriller-type novels, this one is different. It's still very suspenseful, don't get me wrong, but it's more of a drama than anything else.
The Denbe family is imploding after Justin's affair and Libby's subsequent fondness for prescription pills. He doesn't know (primarily because she's still hurt and angry and barely speaking to him) and they're both not spending as much time with their daughter.
Which means that in a very sick way, the kidnapping is almost a good thing because it forces them to reconnect as a family and try to stick together in order to survive. And because of all that, I was more curious about whether the family would be able to overcome all of the difficulties from before the kidnapping and not whether they would actually manage to survive their time with the captors.
Don't get me wrong, the kidnappers are very creepy (especially Mick) but I was more fascinated with the family dynamics.

4 1/2 to 4 3/4 stars. I can't totally 5 star this one. It was a really good book. It kept me fully engaged. I love a good mystery/thriller. This one did keep me guessing. If you read Book 1 (you don't have to by the way, this can stand alone) you get more of Tessa Leoni, but this time she puts her previous police skills to work as an investigator for a private firm investigating the kidnapping of a family of three.
So why would the kidnappers take the Mother, Father and teenage daughter. That is the premise of this book. It is super interesting. But I will admit that at one point I did guess who was behind the kidnapping and I did think the reasoning was a bit convoluted and made little sense to me. Hence the reason for not being 5 stars for me. That said I enjoyed the book anyway.
