The amount of foreshadowing just in the first few chapters of Book 1 that don’t get their payoff until the final book is incredible to me. I liked Book 1 the first time I read it but I wasn’t wowed and after finishing the trilogy it didn’t stand out in comparison to Book 2 & 3. It was definitely better on the re-read, I really love the world building, the political intrigue, the development of Damen and Laurent’s characters. There were aspects of Damen’s character arc that were built in this book, that I had forgotten about when I’d gotten to Kings Rising and in that book some of his actions had felt out of nowhere to me—but going back to Captive Prince now, it was there!! It was still budding but it was always there!! 😂
