This was hard for me because Damen is not my favorite, I'm not even sure if I like him, and this is told entirely from his POV. Laurent is equally unlikeable at the start, though the more you learn about him, the more I could empathize with his situation and the more curious I am about to see how his character develops.

Erasmus was the best character in this book, even though you see so little of him. His chapter at the end of the book was my favorite.

I'm interested enough to see what happens and have been told the story gets better in the next book.

i definitely realized a little way through the book, this is definitely not for me. to an extent, i understand why people enjoy the series, but many of the developments towards the end felt very... sudden? i will not be finishing the series.

The writing was just inherently bad and just confusing as well as they story line was bad and not cohesive. Also don't like the pedophilia and slavery.

the world and its interhuman relationships are very brutal and perverse which can be quite gruesome if you are not ready for it.
otherwise, i got immersed in the story although it is noticeable that this book is primarily world building and is setting the mood for the other two books. therefore, i recommend reading at least the first two books to get a grasp of the plot of the series.

i read this for the first time a few years ago, but by the first twenty pages of my reread, i realized that i didn’t remember ANY of this. some names were familiar and i remember the basic plot but everything else felt new. so it was fun to read this again, and i’m happy i did. i remember likening the second and third books more so i’m excited to keep going
