First 3/4 of the book was amazing but the ending was kinda disappointing, although definitely a surprise for sure

This book has been on my shelves for quite some time already. I discovered the book in a bookstore in Antwerp, decided not to buy a copy and regretted it a few hours later and ordered it online. Like with a lot of those impulse orders, the book stayed unread for quite some time. Until the Amazon 30% sale where I could get the rest of the series with a huge discount. However, buying the rest of the story rekindled my excitement to start this first book.

I started reading last week and was immediately sold. I was especially impressed with the world building. The author put a lot of thought into this book. The mythology is complicated, the world feels big, despite the fact that we only see a relatively small part of it, and in the end a lot of throwaway lines become very important all of a sudden. I'm therefore really excited to read the rest of the series and to see and learn more.

Especially after that finale. Due to all the world building, the storyline felt a little all over the place at times. Especially our heroine wasn't really in control of her own story. Everything happened to her. Wherever people sent her, she went. She was doing things she didn't understand. She was also messing up while panicking and attempting to help. There was therefore a moment I wished for a little more direction.

However, the finale of the book made up for literally everything. I don't wanna give too much away of course, but I loved the politics, I loved the reveals and I loved how by the end of the book the couple we had started rooting for, although their relationship needs a lot more development before I will really root for them, were even more enemies than they were when they met. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of interesting stuff waiting for us in the sequels!

Beginning was interesting but I lost interest when she had brunch with the villain.

It didn't really catch my attention at first, as I found the protagonist pretty naive in disclosing her secrets so easily and trusting the king, but I started liking it more towards the end. The characters are ok, I don't find myself particularly attached to them, but I enjoyed the plot twist and the cliffhanger at the end.
