The YA troupes are a bit more evident in this book than in the author’s previous work. However, it is a remarkable second novel with an effective plot structure, atmospheric from beginning to end, visceral in the horrors of what can be done to a human being (mind, body, and soul), and a big high-five for diving into the ableism directed towards the autistic while giving them the direction in learning how to shut up their own internal rabbits. Also, “George, we were all rooting for you! HOW DARE YOU!!!”

A majority of graphic content in this novel addresses transphobia, abhorrent ableism against autistic folks, misogyny/sexism (the “biology” argument), nasty surgeries, medical content and trauma, physical abuse and violence, and sexual abuse. Any minor in the novel is aged 14-16. It also features familial rejection, pus, stitching up wounds, a graphic abortion, self-mutilation, execution, and a ton of injuries and gore involving glass. It can be a hard read at times.

I just want to say thank you to Andrew Joseph White. Never have I felt so seen and understood by a book before. I have never felt so supported by an author while reading a book. I have never felt so valued as a reader. This was not just a story, it was an experience for me.

I don’t really know how to express how important this book is to me. I don’t think I have never felt so seen reading a book before. I don’t want to necessarily suggest this book to other Autistic AFAB folks because it’s full of the worst things that can (and have) happen to us, but if you’re like me and reading things that trigger you can sometimes feel cathartic—I think it will mean a lot. I couldn't stop once I started reading. It’s heavy, it’s upsetting, and the body horror is really gnarly and stomach churning. I appreciate the note about historical/medical accuracy, I do wish the author had expanded to speak about the evils of ABA therapy as well since it’s also a part of the narrative.
