Despite the graphic content of this book, it was an incredibly engaging read. There were a lot of poetic elements interspersed which I loved. It was a real page turner for me. I am someone who is not squeamish so the graphic gore and other content wasn't difficult for me to swallow. The only reason it wasn't a perfect 5 for me was because I just wanted more from the book itself. The writing style is accessible, but that lowers the challenge of reading it. To be fair, the book pushed in a lot more ways than it's writing style (see graphic medical content and horrific reality of the world our protagonist must endure) but that doesn't mean I wasn't left feeling like something was missing from my plate. Still, I would most certainly recommend it to anyone who loves gothic horror and wants to see some actually good and informed autistic representation with a side of queer resilience! I will definitely be giving the author's other books a read soon.

oh my fucking god. oh my Fucking God.
this books was Amazing. as a queer autistic person, this is The representation i needed. oh my god.
the trans autistic experience is so well written, so accurate, so complex and true, yet simple.
i personally can’t say i was, well, horrified by the horror and gore but it might just be me. i know most people would definitely be queasy at the very least, so that’s something to keep in mind.
overall, andrew joseph white did a spectacular job with this book! i’ve already ordered his other book, hell follows with us, and i can’t wait for his future releases!! 100% instabuy every book he releases

This was a very uncomfortable read, but that's not to say that it was a bad thing.

There is a lot of medical terminology and surgery. So we do have body parts and bodily fluids throughout.

This is also a book set in the 1800's. And even though we do have light fantasy elements, we get to experience what some of the women of this time had to endure at the hands of the men who want to keep them down and break them.

I also felt that the body dysmorphia that our main character experienced was well done, although uncomfortable to read. I really felt what he was going through.
