I had good intentions of reading this before the movie came out. I partially succeeded in that I read the book before watching the movie, though long after the movie was released. I was shocked by the violence but probably less so than I would've been on the big screen. A taut bit of storytelling, though I'm not sure if I'll read the rest of the series.

A great volume of the Sin City saga. It’s really in the spirit of the first one. The character Marv returns. We see again the merciless struggle instead of overly justified feuds. Excellent introduction of new characters too.

I'd be lying if I didn't say the artwork is often stunning. It constantly left me just staring at the page and absorbing the entire image.
Sadly the short stories didn't work for me. Sure they are all tied together but it lacked the depth of the other volumes.

I love the Sin City short stories - they're some of Miller's gut-punchiest writing and most visually mindblowing work.
Crazy visceral. What I like about this book is how unapologetically ridiculous it is. Miller is basically still doing superhero comics with the thinnest veneer of Chandleresque hardboiled noir layered over top. Look at those images: the trenchcoat billowing behind Marv, the ability to survive the impossible, the overamped narrative and storybeats. It's so explosive and over the top, and it's helluva lotta fun.
I've always felt that the main characters in this series were so poorly developed that it was hard to care about them for an entire book (not to mention hard to follow, because so many of them look alike, especially the females). This anthology of "shorts" actually cashes in on that fact, maintaining reader interest and investment for a few minutes at a time, without much concern for continuity or broader arcs-- just snippets, which is all the series has really achieved, in my eyes, anyhow. Some backstory is filled in, some old characters are fleshed out, and a few new faces are introduced. It's delicious noire, with every short story ending in death or violence, and truly phenomenal art stringing it all together. The "Silent Night" short, with its white snow and harsh lights on black, was particularly visually striking.
