Was it a mess? yes. Was it entertaining? also yes. My lit teacher recommended this to me, and i’m happy she did.

this play is fucking exhausting. somehow, that is a good thing.

okay. to be frank, a lot of things about this suck. misogyny and racism run rampant. characters get put on stage without logic or justification (
what were lavinia and bassanius  even doing there?
). all but 3 of them have something utterly hateable about them. but i can't bring myself to hate the play itself. it's too interesting of a historical case study, too crafty in its machinations, too utterly outrageous in the lengths it is willing to go to elicit the reaction it desires. it's probably blasphemy to prefer this to the greats of tragedy, but i've never been a fan of supernatural horror and this fell right in my niche: overt classical references, revenges that actually come to fruition, and buckets upon buckets of blood. borders on too nasty for its own good (for other people i'm sure it crosses that line entirely); for me, it pulls enough punches to make it bearable—if, as i said, exhausting.

I’m not entirely sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, the way Shakespeare writes Black characters (particularly Aaron) plays into a lot of awful stereotypes. It moves far too fast for the gratuitous violence to have any real impact on a reader, but I’m sure that part is much more powerful as a performance. On the other hand however, this play contains one of my favorite comebacks in any piece of media ever. Act 4 scene 2 lines 75-76 in the edition I read. The language is witty and sharp. This definitely isn’t my least favorite Shakespeare play, but it’s also far from my favorite.

Classically not considered the best Shakespeare play but it does feature perhaps the first “yo mamma” joke in history so there’s that. I’d love to try and stage this one day.
