Pretty awesome graphic novel. Although the climax was underwhelming, having watched the film first. Still an enjoyable read.

Certain aspects of Kick-Ass have perhaps not aged well. The main character's incel-ish-ness as a part of his whole tragic background story feels dated. Not to minimize his issues, but the whole horny, lonely, can't-talk-to-a-girl trope is just overdone, to say the least. And then there's pretending to be gay so that he can get closer to said girl. Yeah.

Now that that's out of the way, though, Kick-Ass is fast-paced and action-packed. And while I was pretty over the titular character by the end of it, I was left definitely needing to read more Hit-Girl. This book is *very* violent. But the juxtaposition of said violence with the fact that the heroes in this book are freaking children, disturbing as it was, was very engrossing. Three stars for a...you know...kick-ass, rockin' story with hopes for more Hit-Girl in the future.

What the tunk did I just read?!

This was just okay.

The writing was ok. I’m surprised at how little I liked JRJR’s art.

I suppose it was pretty edgy back then to have a 12 year old girl as a killing machine, but so many of Millar’s ideas ended up getting used elsewhere that now it just seems obvious.

I liked the big confrontation with the mob at the end, but I didn’t love it. Characterization was really minimal, even for the leads.

Dave is a horny, depressed Peter Parker. Addicted to action and violence because it makes him feel _something_, even if it is just his testicles getting zapped.

I remember not liking the movie, and feeling like an old man because of it. I think I was uncomfortable with how far it went, and how pleased it was with itself showing gruesome things. I did not get the same feeling with the comic, even though I'm sure it went lots further. But with the comic, I felt that it was more conscious of how far it was going with its violence. It even comments upon it several times, comparing the duo with a Spider-Man/Punisher team up.

The story is fun, the art is beautiful, and some of the characters are quite funny. It's all very juvenile, in a nostalgic way. You recognize some teenage jumps in logic, only the comic takes them seriously and plays around with them. Acting to be gay to be around the hot girl? Inventing a swear word? And the premise itself: dressing up and fighting crime.
