Don’t be fooled by the title, this books is about men told through traumatizing women.

I read The Silent Patient a few months ago and enjoyed it, but my friend read this, The Maidens, first and hated it so violently I decided I had to read it to out of curiosity. I wanted to know if his way of writing was the cause or if this book was so very different. I think I can safely say that while this book has some differences from The Silent Patient, it is similar enough that if you hated reading one of these books, you’ll likely hate reading another. Thankfully, I actually like reading his books and will likely continue to do so.

I feel like this book had the potential to be so much more interesting than it was. Big reveal at the end just doesn’t feel satisfying because it kind of comes out of nowhere and then the book just ends

Love the premise, the tension, and the depiction of Cambridge University’s darker side … but I just feel let down by the ending.

The conclusion to Henry’s obsession with Mariana feels laughably rushed. Then we are flung into the reveal of the murderer, which wasn’t necessarily predictable but just ended up a bit hollow.
I didn’t object to it being Zoe, but the motive felt cheap and, again, rushed. The epilogue was also kind of unnecessary and added nothing to the story.
