This book was an easy read, but tugs so deeply at your heart. One can learn so much from Alyce. She has become one of my fictional heroes. She did not let life turn her sour, like it with Midwife Jane. Alyce had a heart that was so pure, so brave. She is simple and yet so extraordinary.

I really was liking the beginning of this book, however the end fell a bit flat for me.  Still a good Newbery Medal winner!

Part of out Medieval Era study. Quick story, engaging throughout. Good for discussions on the village classes of the time. Also discussions on self-confidence, taking one's life/learning/future into your own hands.

So good. Read as a child and god bless Karen Cushman. The ballad of Lucy whipple, this, and Catherine called birdy were absolute faves. I want to read the other three mentioned in the back. Excellent

This is a tricky one. The girl is homeless and starving then she is taken in by an emotionally abusive woman. Not sure what the moral of the story is supposed to be. Perseverance, I suppose.
