Book talk notes for grades 6 and 7. Orphaned girl who starves and sleeps in the dung heap is taken in by a sharp-tongued, cruel midwife. Doesn't provide her with any real training but Alice spies and starts to gain knowledge. Ends up failing to deliver a baby on her own and runs away out of shame. Spends some time working at an inn until realizing that what she really wants to do is finish her apprenticship and find her place in the world. Goes back.
Very interesting book about the hardship and struggles of living in the medieval period, as well as the medicine and superstitions that surrounded the birthing process. Life back then was delicate and brutal at the same time.

The ending just ended....like in the middle of the story. Felt like I was missing the last half of the book.
Read for Newberry Challenge - 1996 winner
Why are all Newberry books incredibly depressing. This book takes place in the 14th century and focuses on an orphan homeless girl who takes everything in stride despite living an incredibly depressing life with very little love except from a cat. The ending is semi redemptive but still.

This is one of those books where you wonder if the author is just remembering a past life.
It's very well written and full of wit, tragedy, and comedy. I feel like I learned something about medieval England. At the very least it made me want to become a foster parent even more!
I like children's books like this. The ones that are easy to read and a lot more than just cutesy. But if your kid's super sensitive I suggest you gently steer them away from this one. (Although I firmly believe in allowing children to read whatever they like) I don't know. It was good and it made me happy.

If you like historical fiction, you will love this book.
