Highly entertaining and expertly written fantasy focusing on two of the women of Arthurian legend: Igraine, destined to be King Arthur's mother, and the sorceress Morgan. Their fates become intertwined as young women when the politics of the kingdom where Igraine's father rules sweep them up into events beyond their control or personal ambitions for their own futures. The author takes some liberties with the canonical lore but in a way that remains respectful of the legend. And given that this is all myth and folklore to begin with, reinterpretations are both expected and welcome as a way of reexamining the enduring power of the story. I appreciated the darker take on Merlin's character in particular as well as the realistic depiction of the limits of women's power during the historical time period. Throw in a forbidden romance and dark betrayals and you have all the ingredients for the perfect fantasy read. The time travel element was also interesting although the young man who is recruited from the future to help played a less integral role than I expected but there are hints he may still have a part to play in further installments of this very promising new series. Perfect, fun read for fans of reimagined folklore with a fantasy twist.
