This book is dowdy. I wouldn't think "dowdy book" possible, but here it is. It is also depressing. Yet another book that convinces me that Book of the Month is not a worthwhile subscription service because there is no way this got out of a committee of book lovers to get the greenlight for distribution. There had to have been publisher kickbacks for this selection.
This read like you retired neighbor's novel. They went to a workshop to develop characters, wrote a book about them, asked you to read it, and you did to be polite.
This one truly drained me. I kept reading because of the title. I had hope. There was no pay off.
I would not recommend this to anyone.
I read a paper copy and am debating what to do with it. Typically I pass these along to friends but this one is too frumpy. I can't inflict this on others.

A beautifully written, heartbreaking and hopeful look at love, loss, grief and relationships in small town Connecticut.
This book left me feeling melancholy. I’m not sure it’s my favorite way to feel after a book, but I’ll admit that this was beautifully written and moving. This seems like a book made for people who are grieving. I really cared about the characters and Joella did a wonderful job with conveying their complex feelings. In the end, this book delivers exactly what it advertises: “a little hope.”

Overall I really enjoyed the book. The subject matter is a little dark, but realistic and each storyline is tied with a little bow of hope, just like all our lives.
I only gave 4 stars because it was a bit difficult to get into, the way each chapter felt like starting a new book. But by the end I really appreciated the jump of consciousness and getting all the different perspectives.
In the end I was completely invested in these lives and rooting for them to see that light at the end of their tunnel.

A Little Hope follows a group of people in a small Connecticut town all going through various hardships, yet all connected to each other in some way. I thought this book was fantastic and I loved so many of the quotes, but you should also know it’s really heavy. The writing was amazing and even though there are a lot of characters, it wasn’t hard to connect with them. He writes less about their actions, and gives us more of a window into their feelings as real, flawed, and utterly human, characters. There were a couple times where I had to stop to take a breather since it was a lot to take in, but overall a beautiful story.
Definitely check the trigger warnings before starting it.
If you’re in the mood for a good cry and a small town story about the small ways in which we are all connected, A Little Hope is a great one to pick up!
poor writing, two-dimensional characters, and achingly trite overall.

There are moments of tender, lovely writing in this. For whatever reason though, it just didn’t hit for me. Maybe because it’s too many narrating characters in too short of a book? I don’t know. It just didn’t do much for me.
Joella made me laugh, smile, and cry throughout this marvelous book. So much humanity and compelling storylines. The character arcs were so real and full of promise but also melancholy
