“Well, we do the things they weren’t able to,” Mrs. Crowley says. “We vote because they can no longer vote. We look at the ocean because they can’t. We think about them when we put up a Christmas tree, and later when we sit there and gaze at the lights. We do all the things they can’t. That is how we love them when they are gone.”
I’ve now read and enjoyed both of Joella’s books. Even with the hard subjects he tackles, his writing calms me and is just easy to read. I believe what I enjoy most is how he puts on paper the random thoughts we all have daily. Not sure that makes sense to anyone other than me, but my mind is a constant motion of thoughts.

I really really loved this book. It was beautifully written. My only qualm was that I wish it was a little longer!! I really wanted to connect with all the characters but felt just out of reach with a few of them.

I was drawn to this book because I am a huge Olive Kitteridge fan. Funnily enough, I always wished that the surrounding characters in one chapter, became the leads in the next as to get a little preview of them and then their backstory. A Little Hope did exactly this and it was really an enjoyable form of story telling. It was thought provoking in a tender way and so many of the character exchanges were done exceptionally (Darcy and Suzette's was one of my favorites and the restaurant scene with the Lionel's and the Tylers.) Looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
So many different character perspectives I didn’t feel like I was able to connect with them as individuals.
3.5 stars!
nothing wrong with this book i just feel like it wasn't for me
edit: now i know why it wasn't for me. the lack of a central plot made it hard for me to engage with the book. i get that it's supposed to be character studies of a multitude of characters, but i was craving for more interconnections between them that i haven't found. it's like reading a collection of short stories, and those are something i don't read as a single piece
due to this rationalization, i'm cutting my rating a .5 star sorry

Really enjoyed this debut novel. It is a slow moving story over the course of a year (or more). Stories of interconnected people in a small town. These stories are often difficult, sad, even tragic. However, life keeps moving on, and there is beauty among the sadness and happiness to found.
