A Little Hope

Really enjoyed this book, almost a meditation on connection, life, death… not light but not hopeless either.
I found the characters a little hard to keep track of but otherwise this was a deeply affecting read. Recommend!

Heartbreak, death, grief, hopelessness and hope

I love stories of interwoven characters. This was a mess. Way too many characters. Nothing happened. No one was connected. Didn’t like at all.

I read somewhere that if I loved This Is Us, that I would like this book. It was okay. There were definitely a lot of people with their own stories and they all meshed together in a small city in Connecticut. I liked the writing of each season change and how it affected the characters. It gets three stars from me because it took me awhile to get through. Sometimes, I just didn’t like the book. Other times, I did.

This book reminded me of some of Robert Altman movies where all the characters lives weave together. The author seamlessly integrates the story and created rich characters I was invested in seeing what happened.
Wonderful and moving novel.

This book…my first by this author but definitely not the last. His writing is beautiful and poignant and touched so many nerves in me that were already raw. Freddie and Greg’s story has the most impact on me, given what life has thrown at my family. I loved the expert weaving of stories which I feel sometimes is not done well by authors. This was masterful. Beautiful read.

This book was beautiful and heartbreaking. I loved all of the different characters and how they all slowly mixed together as the book went on.

50 States Reading Challenge: Connecticut
This is a meandering "day-in-the-life" kind of book that highlights pivotal moments in the lives of people living in close proximity. The main focus of the characters was grief with a little bit of hope- hence the name. I found it difficult to track with some of the characters, as story lines had similar moments, names, or feelings. The book would also jump time lines from present to past and then on to another character. All in all, it was just a hard book to track with combined with difficult life circumstances. For those who have experienced grief (specifically cancer or miscarriage), this could be a triggering book or perhaps a breath of, "Ah, finally. Someone understands how this feels."

This took me over a month to finish because I dreaded picking it up. There were some good parts but all in all, just sad. I don’t mind a book with sad moments but this was just sad from start to finish. Too much sad. I skimmed the last 75-80 pages just to get through and get an idea of how it ended.
