Like all such books that switch perspectives with each chapter, you only get a smattering of time in the head of each character, the combined effect of which evokes an overall feeling and theme, rather than telling a specific story with a narrative arc. For me that theme focused on vulnerability and how, if we share it or hide it with others, it can shape and define our relationships. 3.5 stars overall, rounded up to 4 for strong writing.
Lots of sadness but still enjoyable novel. Alternating narrators left me wanting more of some and less of others.
A Little Hope by Ethan Joella is a beautiful book about the ways we are connected and the hope we can find even in moments of despair. The book is written in connecting vignettes about a variety of characters who live in a Connecticut town. It moves swiftly touching on the everyday lives and personal triumphs and tragedies of each character. I really liked the quick pacing and the lean storytelling. Sometimes it was a little hard to connect to the characters, but the stories really grabbed me.

promised a little hope but needed much more. nothing but pain and depression but sometimes it be like dat. ultimately an easy but forgettable read.
Reading A LITTLE HOPE felt like sipping on a warm cup of tea on a cold day: this story is warm, enveloping, and delightful
I so wanted to like this book. I liked that each chapter was written in a different point of view and I liked that each character was connected to each other. But that was it. It deals with some heavy subjects; mostly grief. This one could have been so good but it lacked something that made me actually care for the characters. At the end I was just disappointed and wanted it to end. Not for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this heartfelt novel full of interconnected stories about a community of people living in the fictional town of Wharton, Connecticut.
This novel is a quiet book with endearing characters that are all dealing with grief, worry, struggles, love, hope… basically everything that makes up a life.
It’s a well written debut novel and I look forward to whatever Joella writes next.
