Another easy read from Christie, this time a selection of short stories featuring the intriguing Parker Pyne. This gentleman is not an investigator per se, but rather a student of human behaviour and psyche, a bit like Miss Marple but with more statistics. With his acquired knowledge, he sets out to sell ‘happiness’ to people, in a rather smart and surprising way.

I rather enjoyed these, trying to fathom what Pyne had planned for his ‘clients’. As soon as you believe you know the ‘formula’, Christie changes the narration, first with some nice turnarounds, and then by having her protagonists go on a holiday abroad, or rather trying to since people keep accosting him to solve their problems :O)

I hadn't heard of Parker Pyne before embarking on reading all of Christie's works, and with good reason — these stories aren't her finest work. A few of them had clever twists that I enjoyed, but mostly they dealt in tropes, like spouses needing to make their partners jealous to regain their attention, everyday men wanting danger and adventure, and rich women who would really be happier mucking manure on a farm and bearing children. The primary character's arrogance irritated me, and his solutions were generally reached less by deduction than by stereotype and prejudice (backed by "statistics"). This wasn't one of my favorite Christie books.

A nice collection of short stories. I brought this with me while travelling and it was great to be able to stop after each short story. Parker Pyne isn’t as likeable as Marple or Tommy & Tuppence, but he is similar to our hero Hercule Poirot. I would read another book about him.

This book is a bunch of short stories that revolve around Pyne's cases. They were so short that it was hard to get into the story. I think Agatha was phoning it in a bit on this one.
