3.5 AVERAGE

2.5 ⭐️ (and that’s me being generous)

I don’t know what to say… it was a book. That’s about it really. Nothing outstanding - in either a good or bad way. It was kind of boring, but not exceptionally so that it makes you mad about it. Just… bland?
My least favourite Christie novel.

It’s not at all what you think it’s going to be - and I don’t mean that as a compliment. It’s a series of short stories that revolve around someone that is essentially a professional problem solver. A combination of private investigator and therapist. Just not complex enough for me - not enough details or complications.

"Are you happy? If not, consult Mr. Parker Pyne."

Parker Pyne is a different kind of detective. He listens and observes people and then prescribes a course of action to help them come to a resolution regarding their source of unhappiness. Some of these clients have legitimate mysteries that need a clever mind, but most of the clients have life problems they can't seem to solve on their own. At Pyne's disposal is a cast of characters that help him bring desired happiness to unhappy clients. These are not the mysteries that Christie's Poirot and Marple solve but they are compelling and satisfactory all the same. I really enjoyed this series. It was a lot of fun to read.

Real rating: 3.5

I really enjoyed Mr Parker Pyne and his ability to make people happy. Though when he says he's not a detective it's a bit misleading. Because he sometimes thinks like one.

The first Agatha Christie I didn't really enjoy. Something just didn't click for me here

I wouldn’t follow Mr. Parker Pyne’s relationship advice, but these are clever and charming little tidbits. Devolves a bit towards the end when he is traveling and Orientalism creeps in around the edges. Recommended for those who need a cozy and intriguing audiobook.

Interesting to see the international tour at such an interesting time in history (post great recession, pre fascism) and the beautiful ancient sites.

There was once or twice where he said "i knew because of Statistics" when really it was genetics, biology, psychology.
