I enjoyed the authors adaptation of The Wild Swans, and was excited to read more about the stepmothers past. It was a great prequel to the earlier two books and I enjoyed her world building

“Never will I apologize for being the monster they made me”

I absolutely loved Six Crimson Cranes and after the shocking unveiling of things in The Dragon’s promise, an intrigue was definitely created within me about this certain character where the current plot is based on. Her Radiant Curse just gave the character and their actions in the other books much more sense in a profound way, what a beautiful back story of a strong woman the defied everything and bent the world for her loved one’s while living a hard life herself

EL’s books are always brimmed with East Asian lore’s and legends, Her Radiant curse is as usual is lushly crafted with so much depth and magic where the story redefines love. I went in knowing fully well it’s going to be a little heartbreaking but I ended up enjoying every bit of it. The audio is EXCELLENT like her previous books and I cannot recommend the audiobook enough because it honestly got the best narration , you’d feel like listening to a fairy tale narrated by your favorite family member

While it can be read as a standalone, I’d highly recommend reading it in conjunction with Six Crimson Cranes Duology. Overall it is such a satisfying stand alone piece of work!

Thanks to PRH audio for my audiobook!!

This is a spinoff prequel to Six Crimson Cranes, which I read a while ago. Honestly, it didn't click that it was a spinoff until almost the end, which is a bit embarrassing, but I guess that makes it a good spinoff since I could read through the whole thing without feeling like I needed to know anything in Six Crimson Cranes. Also, I don't remember a thing from SCC and I meant to reread it but didn't have the time. I haven't read the sequel either.

I enjoyed this book at the start, but I lost momentum in the middle, so it took me a while to actually finish it. I love the world that it's set in, which I believe is a fantasy world based in South East Asia, and the beginning really drew me in. Being introduced to all the characters was fun, but I gradually started getting tired of the story. I understand that Channari and Vanna's bond is strong despite them being perceived so differently and I get that they would do anything for each other, but it just felt a little overdramatic, put on even. Every act that Channari does is what she believes is best for her sister, who I didn't like very much. Vanna felt like someone who saw the best in the world even when there was strong evidence against that, and she would make excuses on why certain things couldn't happen even if they needed to. Because I didn't like Vanna very much, I sometimes didn't see why Channari had to act the way that she did, and honestly, I rolled my eyes at times because the things she did were so predictable, but I guess that's YA fiction.

I enjoyed the ending though. It made me tear up a bit and in a way, I expected it to end like that. I feel bad for Hokzuh. He deserved better than being judged based on what his ancestors did. I hate that he was used throughout by both Channari and Angma, and I hate what Lim did with him. I'm not sure I wanted a romance between him and Channari, and I get that this isn't his story but he deserved better.

Otherwise, I don't think any of the other characters particularly stood out to me. Ukar was cool, but I think his charm is entirely in the fact that he's a snake.

I'm not entirely sure I would recommend this. It's one of those books that you binge and forget, and even a week and a bit later, I had to really try to remember what the book was about. Granted, I read it over 2 weeks-ish but it was more like 2 separate binges than a gradual read.

A few chapters into the book I was hooked. The story has a good pace and a nice mood. The characters and the setting are really interesting.

For my taste, I would have wished for a happier ending and a bit more detailed descriptions of the world and creatures. But I'm satisfied enough, so 'Six Crimson Cranes' are already waiting on my Kindle
