channari's story is so tragic and bittersweet omg 😭 thank you to elizabeth lim for her beautiful mind and saving me and my book bestie from the absolute duds from our faves recently. she's the queen of YA fantasy and has just proven to me that she is able to write epic fantasies, romance, and total tragedies. i kind of wish i read this before six crimson cranes but it was still a wonderful reading experience regardless. the worldbuilding, the characters (even the villains), the plot, the way i remembered everything from six crimson cranes was chef's kiss. i knew elizabeth lim would make this a heartwrenching experience and, after she beat me up, i thanked her for it.

i will say that, as beautiful as it is—tran nguyen is a gorgeous, talented, hardworking artist—i wish the publisher kept the original cover for the usa paperback edition (click here for image comparison of original cover vs paperback). it's a really cool nod but
it's lowkey a spoiler for people who haven't read six crimson cranes or her radiant curse. plus, channari is the main character and she spends more than 90% of the book growing up as a brown girl with snake-like features
and the cover should reflect that. readers who are new to the world of loryan won't realize it at a glance so it's fine but that's my biggest gripe.

i love stories about sisters, i love the mythologies that i recognize and the ones that i don't, and i love elizabeth lim's writing. this has me hyped for forgery of fate!

buddy read with my book bestie, @theboneforest.

I wasn't aware that there was a sequel to Six Crimson Cranes, so I assumed this was the only other book in the series? Lucky for me, there is a sequel as well as this fantastic prequel!

Getting the other side of the story, seeing how Channi and Vanna grew up and came to be, was a great addition to the world and really gives SO MUCH insight as to why she acted the way she did in SCC. I was hugely interested in seeing how the "snake-faced" idea was executed and how Channi and Vanna's relationship as sisters grew and changed. One of my favourite things in media is true, authentic sibling love, especially when there's a bit of an underlying rivalry within that love. OOUGH it's so good to read (and write)!

I think one thing that bothered me is how much Vanna was described as lovely and beautiful. I'm pretty sure that halfway through the book, the readers are quite aware of how radiant and gorgeous Vanna is. I understand that this is definitely through Channi's eyes and she is a little obsessed with her beauty because of her own complex with her cursed face. Still, it got a little repetitive.
That was my big problem with the book in general, it had a lot of repetitive scenes and I felt like I was rereading pages at some point, especially the fight scenes. Reading page upon page of Channi's poison burning people and her getting the wind knocked out of her was a little redundant.

Besides that one flaw, though, I did genuinely enjoy this book and I love when a previously stand-alone book gives a character that was previously unexplored, a book of their own to add so much to the world and what we know about it. Especially when it's traditionally the villain or antagonist, because it gives such a new perspective and often gives the reader a lot more sympathy for their actions.

this was a really well done prequel! we all know i will read anything elizabeth lim writes so when i saw that she was releasing a book abt raikama?? immediately sold. i really enjoyed getting a look into channi’s past and how she became raikama. i thought the storytelling was incredible, as usual, and the plot was great too. i knew that the ending would be upsetting and it still got me so once again a great job from lim. after reading this i immediately got the urge to reread the scc duology so i’m rlly happy to have been pushed back into that world! i love you elizabeth lim!!!!!
