This book has its flaws and certainly found some controversy, but I really enjoyed it. Maybe enjoyed is the wrong word - it was a challenging, upsetting read - but Yanagihara has such a compelling style that I always come away from her books wanting more.
challenging dark emotional sad slow-paced

Beautifully written, but very long-winded. Topic is heavy to say the least.

what the actual hell

When I started reading this highly recommended what they call "torture porn", I thought I knew what I was getting myself into. But oh boy! I did not expect to experience what I did - this book made me feel a lot of emotions; anguish, grief, anger, vulnerability, and happiness (a few times). I wanted to give up reading at 40% but I kept getting back to it in the hopes that things will get better for the protagonist. Finally on Pg.426, I gave up. I realized it DOES NOT get better.

The emotional rollercoaster while reading this book is quite unnecessary and frankly, not at all recommended. I thought I was reading a book about friendship, and while it does have some great writing and explains it beautifully in some places, it's mostly a book on child rape, abuse, abandonment and a really really broken man. It's a sick book and a societal hazard :/

If you want to maintain your mental health, do not read. I need to now go rehab by reading some chick-lits!

One of the most moving books, I've ever read. The author looks at every character with so much warmth and love - I missed them all, when the book was over.

I will be depressed forever. This book has changed my brain chemistry and I need therapy.
