Reads surprisingly well for a several thousand year old document about fighting wars before the advent of the brunt of military technology. There is not so much wisdom to be gained as some might espouse, but if you have an interest in the management of an army this is a fairly interesting text. I myself cannot help but be fascinated by the wisdom of Sun Tsu, even though I will never be able to put any of it into practice. Maybe the next time I play Fire Emblem, I will be more conscious of the positioning of my enemy, but beyond that I can't see this being much use to me. All that said, from a pure perspective as a historical document, you can't get much better than this, and the Lionel Giles translation, freely available on Project Gutenberg, has some really great footnotes.

Honestly I think I am the wrong audience for this book (and I knew this going in). Overall the book was fine, and it’s redeeming quality is that it is relatively succinct. There is no wasted time and so even if you don’t find a lot of value personally (like me) you probably only spent an hour or so reading it.

Nobody better start a war with me because I'll destroy you with the knowledge that uhhh... "it is the nature of a log or stone to remain motionless on level ground, and to move when on a slope; if four-cornered, to come to a standstill, but if round-shaped, to go rolling down."
...Okay so maybe not every passage is equally helpful but overall still very cool. I liked when he said "There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare." Yes Sun! Say it louder for the people in the back!

Not usually for me. Buddy read with the hubby! It DID, however, have me feeling that this is another novel to be debated!! Will some of these strategies still work? Are they outdated? Overall, a great look into strategies!

Anybody who has to deal with me on any sort of basis, as in ever, should basically consider this book required reading. I also have about the same affinity for lunches, so, you know, buying me one wouldn't be bad for our relationship.
