**4.5 stars. I really liked this book. I read this after reading up to City of Ashes which may have been a bad idea, seeing as there were a few spoilers. However, it was great. The background information on nephilim and shadowhunters and demons helped with world building for the rest of the Mortal Instruments series. I really loved this book and all the drawings were impeccable. The side notes by Jace, Clary and Simon were hilarious as well. Very lovely companion to TMI series as well as TID series.
[3.5 idk]
I loved every art sketch and "hand written" comment by Clary, Jace and Simon, but still it was hard to get through the Codex. It was like reading a textbook for school and who likes reading textbooks? lol
About the writing style, well it's like Cassie being the teacher, who tries to teach you about everything as easy and understable as possible.
The Codex itself contains a lot of historical and theoretical stuff about the Shadowhunter world, which were partly interesting but as I said, it was hard.. some topics catched my interest some not
I sometimes listened to Jaces notes and skipped some sidebars. lol
at least those comments diversified the book a bit.

I'm pretty sure my eyes glossed over during a few of the more monotonous, information-y parts, but I really enjoyed learning (and relearning) a bit more about the Shadowhunter world/history. The comments from Clary, Jace and Simon were pretty funny, and the illustrations were absolutely gorgeous. Definitely check it out if you're a fan of Cassandra Clare and are interested in discovering a bit more about the elaborate, complex world of the Nephilim.
This was an OK book for me. I really liked the illustration which were very well drawn, and the fonts used for Clary, Jace and Simon's writing; which I thought fit their personalities so well. The conversations between Clary and Simon are interesting, and I enjoyed reading Jace's snarky comments. It provided a bit of a break / comic relief from the main text which could appear dense at times. I was curious about this book from when Tessa picked it up in The Infernal Devices. My favourite part was learning about the runes and seeing what they looked like; because even though they are described in detail in the various series, seeing how they actually looked made it a lot clearer.
This book was a heavy read in terms of the historical content and seemed quite repetitive at times with "We are Nephilim and we were chosen for this great mission. We uphold the law and follow Angel Raziel." I understand that this is how the text was meant to be written (what with it being written from the Clave's perspective), but it was still a little exhausting.

I'm not gonna lie. Most of this is pretty boring, and I had a hard time staying interested. I'm never going to remember most of it as I make my way through the rest of the books. That said, the dullness of it adds to the realism of it as a manual or a textbook. It feels authentic and in that sense also makes the Shadowhunter world feel more realistic. The best part of it, though, is the "comments" from Clary, Simon, and Jace. Most of them made me laugh and helped me get through this book.
Very unnecessary to the series. It would have been better if it took itself seriously without the "commentary" from sarcastic characters. Who defaces a book?? Ugh.
I loved everything!! The only regret I have is that, why didn’t I read this book when I was in my Shadowhunter era??
I didn’t realise I missed Clary, Jace, and Simon until I read their little reviews throughout the book!! Like damn I love that trio!!
Also the artwork!!!

My favourite thing about this is the notes scribbled in by Clary, Simon and Jace. They were clear in character and very amusing. I loved the thoughts put in for things like different hand writing.
Although this book taught me little that I did not already know I am glad to see it complete and feel like I have an overall better understanding of what it is to be part of the Shadow World.
I read this book after completing Clockwork Angel, so I felt a connection to Tessa while reading this.
