How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read discusses the "risks" of reading, as well as unreading, not-reading, forgetting what we read and so on. Bayard writes that at the same time we pick up and read a book, we also involuntarily not pick up and not read all the other books in the universe.
It's paradoxical, clever and occasionally humorous, but I also found it a bit dull.

این کتاب در ستایش نخواندن است اما نه به شکلی که فکر می کنید یا شاید من بعد از صد و هفتاد صفحه همچنان آمادگی پذیرش پیامش را نداشته ام. نویسنده این طور شروع می کند که دلایل زیادی برای نخواندن کتاب وجود دارد، بعد نویسنده به کتاب خانه ای جادویی در داستانی از موزیل می رود و در آنجا با کتابداری که در بزرگترین کتابخانه ی دنیا کار می کند آشنا می شود، کتابدار این طور می گوید که اگر واقعا بخواهید همه ی کتاب ها را بخوانید، اکر واقعا کتاب ها را دوست دارید، نباید هیچ کدام از آن ها را بخوانید، تنها به اسمشان توجه کنید و فهرست، جایگاه کتاب ها را نسبت به یکدیگر پیدا کنید. نویسنده ایده ی کتاب دار را تشریح می کند و سپس به سطوح دیگری از کتاب نخواندن می پردازد، کسانی که اسم نویسنده ی کتاب را شنیده اند، کسانی که کتاب را به سرعت ورق زده اند و کسانی که به یاد ندارند که کتاب را خوانده اند یا نه، یک فصل اختصاص دارد به کسانی که کتاب دیگری را خوانده اند اما فکر می کنند که همین کتاب را خوانده اند و یک فصل اختصاص دارد به اینکه چه طور ممکن است که کتابی را که نوشته اید فراموش کنید ودچار چه طبعاتی شوید. تمام این فصل ها با داستان هایی از کتاب هایی همراه است که نویسنده آن ها را از بالزاک، امبرتو اکو، فردینان سلین و دیگران نقل کرده. نویسنده به این ترتیب بخش های زیادی از کتابی که لازم بوده بنویسد را ننوشته و تنها به تعریف آن از دهان دیگر نویسنده ها پرداخته، بعد برایتان سوال می شود کسی که کتاب نمی خواند چه طور این همه قصه از کتاب های مختلف آن هم با موضوع کتاب نخواندن دارد، بعد که احساس می کنید مچ نویسنده را گرفته اید خودش می گوید آن ها را نخوانده و مثال هایش از نویسنده های بزرگ تنها آن شکلی بوده که به نظرش مناسب بوده در کتاب بیاید. در آخر اما ناگهان کتاب بسیار قوی می شود و می رود به سمت توضیح اینکه فلسفه اصلی از کتاب نخواندن چیست و این که باید به دنبال چه چیزی در کجا باشیم که در کتاب ها پیدا نمی شود.
در پایان سخت ترین توصیه در مورد این کتاب خواندن یا نخواندن است، تنها می توانم بگویم گول مقدمه را نخورید، بیشتر کتاب بسیار کسالت آور است.

Absolutely brilliant. If there is one book you read, or skim, or have an opinion about without reading it - it should be this one.

Kuidagi väga laialivalguv kirjutis oli. Kohati sisaldas näideteks toodud teoste sisukokkuvõtteid, kohati esitas autori arvamusi, mille tarbeks kulutati natuke asjatult trükimusta ja paberilehti. Ühesõnaga, omamoodi väsitav lugemiskogemus.
Autor seisis ilmselgelt ebapopulaarsete arvamuste leeris (raamatute mittelugemine ja lehitsemine on väga okei), mis oli tegelikult üsna huvitav pilguheit - tähtis pole mitte raamatu sisu tundmine, vaid milliste raamatute temaatikaga see kõrvutub ning mis seoseid on sel teiste teoste ja “päriseluga”.
Ilmselgelt köitis mind teost haarama selle pealkiri, aga kahjuks jäin toppama 1/5 lõpus, kuna lugemine ei pakkunud enam uusi mõtteid, vaid jäi end liialt kordama.

I picked this book off of the shelf at my son's house while babysitting, and read it over several visits over a matter of months. Or did I? Maybe I skimmed it. Or perhaps I even unread it

Using Bayard's own abbreviations, I should have marked this book as SB (Book I have Skimmed), but now will have to mark it FB (Book I've Forgotten). Although premised upon an interesting idea, How to Talk about Books You Haven't Read gets tedious quickly. Ultimately, the entire book is nothing more than an extended exercise in deconstruction. However, since Bayard uses examples of characters out of literature as his support, his argument quickly breaks down when one considers that he also proposes the fluidity of these same texts.
Perhaps the most cogent of Bayard's arguments comes in his epilogue where he claims that the modern education system has failed to adequately "deconsecrate" a text and thereby prevents students from (re)inventing texts. Bayard also makes the good point that the demarcation between "Books You've Read" and "Books You Haven't Read" tends to break down quickly as people often speak about books they've only heard of. Some texts have so infiltrated culture and ideas that one literally does not need to read them in order to speak intelligently about them.
This book probably should have been an article rather than hundreds of pages. If you decide to read the entire book, read it with a good sense of humor to keep from getting bogged down.
