I liked The Husband Stitch, Inventory, and The Resident. The worst story is that one of fake Law and Order SVU episode plots. Makes use of a lot of graphic imagery and pain/embarrassment/shame.

One of my favorite books, for sure. Good enough that I wrote my undergraduate thesis on it.

August 2021 reread: Ugh. Literally every time I read this collection it rips out my heart. Especially "The Husband Stitch" (one of my absolute favorite short stories of all time, and I've made everyone from my old roommate to my ex read it now) and "Mothers." The stories about the end of the world (mostly "Inventory" and "Real Women Have Bodies") hit extra hard during a global pandemic.

I loved these. I normally do not enjoy short story reading, as it doesn't suit my reading habits (I like to read a lot in a single sitting), but Machado's writing is phenomenal. Surgically precise and emotionally raw, her stories do not shy away from the dark recesses of humanity, and especially of womanhood; I loved the way she uses the supernatural to enhance her storytelling in a way that leaves you wondering, hovering between one world and the other and wondering what is real, or whether the real matters at all.

I advise a bit of care if picking this one up, as the stories deal with rather dark themes that may be potentially triggering, and Machado does not skimp on description.
