La historia de la fuerte relación paterno filial entre una joven y su padre, quien estuvo muchos años en prisión injustamente. A estos se le unirán tres o cuatro personajes más, entre ellos Charles, de quien sabremos sus desventuras hasta las últimas páginas de la novela. Todo en el contexto de los primeros años de una Revolución Francesa narrada de manera sanguinaria, cruel y vengativa gracias a su estrella la Guillotina, cuyas víctimas no solo serán sólo de la aristocracia y burguesía.
Reconozco que a mediados del libro me costaba retomar y seguir la historia, un poco densa y descriptiva, pero en su último tercio considero la parte más entretenida y lograda, ya con los personajes delineados y las narrativas entrelazándose hasta que todo calze, eso sí que con unas coincidencias un poco rebuscadas.
La novela nos deja una temible villana pérfida y de sangre fría, que con sus manos pendientes siempre de su tejido, la recordaremos por mucho tiempo.

This book took me a long time to read because I started it, paused to read the God Delusion and 1984 and then decided I needed to finish it before moving on or else I would be in danger of never finishing it.
I found the first half of the book difficult to get through, for some reason I was having trouble staying focused while reading the book – I wasn't following the story well and kept getting distracted. Once I finally put away all my other books and focused on this book (about the part where the revolution was starting to really take place) I started enjoying it much more. I found it more interesting and more gripping. I was surprised to find Charles Dickens has a bit of humor in his writing (my first book of his), but the story was sad. It amazes me that when people become so low that they can do such terrible things.
