This was both more and less than what I was expecting - I'll have to read it again to fully grasp it, I think. The book-within-a-book threw me for a while, too.

The prose & character descriptions are rich, expansive yet concise (..."whose habits could not be changed by any force short of cannon fire" is a line that will stick with me), and delicious.

I wanted to love this book. I really did.

While I love the writing style and the premise behind it, it felt almost unfinished.

January finds a book, January reads the book, as do we, but questions feel unanswered. I want to know more about the world IN the book January found.

I never felt connect med to any of the characters and didn’t feel the oomph I wanted to from this book.

I’m glad I finished it, as it was beautifully written but I just feel like something is missing from it

I enjoyed this book! I can see how this book is not for everyone, but I found I liked the book a lot more after I got through the first 50-75 pages or so. (I also went in blind with low expectations, which definitely affects my enjoyment).

This story is, in essence, about January's origin, her coming of age, and her destiny (as opposed to her adventures with doors). The book is centered on strong women, but the men are not all villains. There are several different story lines, some of which are full of beautiful, windswept adventure (I really liked the storyline about Adelaide, that was probably my favorite), while others move more slowly. Some of it was a little predictable, but generally I thought the writing and characters were great. The author has no planned sequels, but I hope she will consider it, because it would be so fun!

Note: There is just a smattering of language, no descriptive sex. It would be appropriate for teens. There are allusions to racial and colonial politics, but I wouldn't say they are front and center, but heads up in case you love/hate those themes.
