I read this and then watched the HBO miniseries starring Kate Winslet. It followed the book in almost every detail even using a lot of the dialog word for word. So it’s easy to say I liked them both. Read my full review here: http://angarena.net/blog/?p=660

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this! It was like a melodramatic soap opera dated 1930s. The things parents do for their children...and ungrateful ones, too! I felt like I'd been transported back in time and I appreciated the author's knowledge on subjects like running a business and art/music. I think it was better than the movie, surprisingly. "Let's get stinko!"

Terrific in every which way

Veda might be one of the most hateful characters in history. I loved pretty much everything in this book

snooze alert

Still not sure how I feel about this novel. It's well written, and Mildred is fantastic protagonist. Despite Mildred independent and feminist writing though, she eventually loses everyone and everything she works for.

It was mostly interesting because of how much it diverged from the film. I guess it was interesting to think about the role of women in the thirties and forties and it was nice that the characters possessed some amount of complexity.

Una lettura strana. Per tutto il libro ho desiderato che Veda avesse finalmente quello che meritava ma, come nella realtà, non sempre le persone hanno quello che si meritano.
