In Young Jane Young, one of the characters, Jane Young, is seeking political office.
However, this book is more than that. It’s Gabrielle Zevin’s take on a fictionalized Monica Lewinsky, told through the eyes of several women who are impacted by a sex scandal between a Florida Congressman and a young intern. Each section is narrated by one of the women, showing the difficult choices they made to escape or deal with the past, all while the Congressman didn’t seem to suffer any consequences.
I particularly liked the last section of the book, which is written as if it’s a choose your own adventure (although the reader only sees the one path we also see what could have been), from Aviva’s point of view. I think it’s an interesting commentary on the lead-up to the scandal, and reading Aviva’s story at the end demonstrates that we truly never know what’s going on in the background.
This book didn’t necessarily fully captivate me, but it is unlike anything I’ve read and I think it would be great for book club. The description states: “This is the story of five women…and the sex sexist scandal that binds them together.” Right there, with the word “sex” crossed out and replaced with “sexist”, we know this will be a commentary on the different treatment of men and women in politics, as well as during and after a sex scandal.
