Review & Thoughts:
  • This book is raw and real and charming in it's own way. I've enjoyed Sutton Foster as an actress since I first saw her on Bunheads. This book was an enjoyable read and I loved the juxtaposition of the patterns of her craft projects woven amongst the ever-changing and new patterns of her life. I loved the snippets of reminders that everything happens for a reason, the importance of family and the knowledge that we're not destined to repeat a specific pattern of behavior if we don't want to be. Important lesson of trusting your gut; it often leads you in the right direction! I loved the way the author talks about her passion for crafting and the importance art has in our lives. There's a quote I particularly loved about art and it made me think about the perspective of what inspires someone to make art in a specific way in different seasons of their lives.
  • Topics & CW: Adoption journey, death, losing a parent, infertility, social media piranhas, bullying, panic attack, nervous breakdown
  • Craft supplies mentioned: Canna's choice yarn from the Lion Brand, Copic markers for drawings
Favorite Quotes:
  • Every piece I describer within these pages means so much more than the yarn or marker with which it was made. Each is a time capsule and heirloom, spanning my past, present, and future, and together they tell a fuller, more complex story of who I am and how I want to be remembered.
  • Art can be a window; it can also be a mirror.
  • For me, being a badass meant owning my talent and my major life decisions - not waiting until I was in a relationship, or more "settled down," whatever that even means.
  • I wanted to piece together all the meaningful moments, like a quilt, to make sense of who I am, where I come from, and how I feel about those I love, in the hopes that it, too, will be passed on, another heirloom.
Recommend for: great pick for those that enjoy memoirs and are fans of Sutton Foster!

Thank you Hachette for the gifted book I read in partnership with the library audio.

As a fan of Younger and Bunheads I am therefore a Sutton Foster fan and when I saw the title of this memoir I was intrigued as someone who also loves to craft.

I was so enthralled with this book. Told through the projects she has created, Sutton tells the story of her life in a vulnerable but yet still lighthearted way so you are rooting for her, crying with her, and celebrating all her wins.

If you like a celebrity memoir, if you like Sutton Foster, or you love crafting, this is one you should pick up.
