good memoir. felt like she had enough time away.
very open honest and vulnerable about who she was and didn’t skip the tough aspects of herself esp as a teen
blended her story with some hawiaan history and legends but def not a book on the history
open about her struggle of finding identity and connecting to Hawian culture
pace might have been slower if reading not audio
overall enjoyed the audiobook

I typically enjoy memoirs and this one sounded intriguing. It was deeply affecting and emotional. The author, Jessica, was unflinchingly honest and bared her soul in these pages. She blended her truth with true Hawaiian history and some of the Hawaiian stories beautifully. I liked the way she used the history or story to frame a particular moment in her life. Her scenery descriptions made me feel like I was there with her. Her story unfolded chronologically and was clear and compelling. I ached for her at times. The ending came up rather abruptly. The epilogue helped to answer a few of the lingering questions I had about how her story continued after the end of the book.
