Though not as enthusiastic as the majority of my friends, I still thoroughly enjoyed this sedate read about a man finding a place to call home when he thought it was never his right to even hope for one.

Jimmy, like most drifters, has had it rough. He’s survived the only way he knew how - to adapt and take the good when it came and to never depend on anyone or anything but himself. He lives a very simplistic life with no expectations, and in return, has no obligations either.

As per the blurb, Jimmy happens to have a note burning in his pocket, and since he has nothing better to do, decides to personally deliver it to carry out a dead man’s wish to try to set some things right. What he finds in small town Rattlesnake is a lot to desire and yearn for, which can be a dangerous, fearsome thing.

That scary thing is Shane. Scary in the fact that Shane makes him want, makes him feel, and certainly, makes him hope. Shane’s interest is piqued, and somehow Jimmy finds himself wrapped up in the man, as Shane finds him a place to stay, a job, and perhaps a little comfort that only a warm body can give, as they ease their mutual hurts, both mental and physical. As much as Jimmy denies he wants what Shane is offering, he can’t help but find reasons or circumstance to stay just one more day.

Again, a really lovely romance where not a lot happens. There was just a tad bit of frustration on Jimmy’s part regarding his reluctance to settle, though completely understandable why he resisted since his whole life had been nothing but rejection. Shane, in turn, was truly wonderful with his strength and perseverance despite his own tragic past. This was a sweet, sexy hurt comfort story that made me smile in contentment as Jimmy and Shane deservedly find happiness with each other.

This was such a cozy book. Not my typical read but this has so much many great reviews. I can’t say that it was my favorite, but it’s a good story. And the writing is wonderful.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing. I think I just found my new favorite book. Everything about this was perfect. I loved the story, the characters, and even the setting was brilliant. Jimmy and Shane were everything. My heart broke for them and what they'd been through, but that only made me cheer harder as they chased their happiness. Kim Fielding knocked it out of the park with this one. I loved it so much that I was sad to see it end. Rattlesnake is an amazing town with great people and I hope we get to see more of it soon.

What a sweet story this was - about broken dreams and being too afraid to hope for something better, about healing and finally letting someone in. Both characters had flaws and were well aware of it, but they were so perfect for each other.

It’s more of a quiet story, fitting for the small-town setting, but it gripped my attention enough to read in one sitting. It made me tear up a time or two, and left me with a smile on my face. Can’t ask for more than that!

3.5 stars. I don't know why I just didn't connect with this book... it was good, I just didn't love it. :-( This was definitely me and NOT the book. *sigh*

Kim Field is fast becoming one of my favorite authors - especially with audible books. The narration of Kc kelly was just perfect for this book.

Jimmy is a wanderer. A man who drifts and has no place to call home and he actually doesn't mind that. One day as he stops to gas up his barely functional vehicle, he notices a hitchhiker and something about that guy strikes a chord with Jimmy. He gives him a lift and when asked where he's going and why, jimmy a whole world does a 180.

Jimmy entering the small town of rattlesnake wasn't what he expected. He was just there to deliver a message but fate had another plan.

I really liked the slow, but simmering relationship between jimmy and Shane. I liked the twists and turns that the story took. I loved that Kim Fielding put me in just the right frame of angst without destroying me or the integrity of the characters.

This is a lovely character study of two damaged men: one mentally, one physically. Not much happens over the course of the novel, as the author dedicates much time to the trivial - the daily stuff that we do every day. We read the characters (to be specific, the narrator Jimmy, who is a drifter who finds himself in the small town of Rattlesnake, California) wake up, clean, fix things, eat breakfast, meet friends (to be specific, his new acquaintance Shane), do chores, have sex, do more work, and so on. What I find so fascinating about this novel is that though so many sentences are dedicated to the inconsequential, together they become something more - consequential, important, necessary. Kim Fielding treats the inconsequential as the foundation for a building: one called life. If you want to read a book that isn't so much a romance as an examination of how to patch up the pieces of your life, I highly recommend this book.

3.5 stars. A heartwarming love story between two people who were both damaged in their own way. The pace was somewhat pedestrian though and things resolved itself a little bit too easily for it to be a four star read.
