I liked it much more the second time and I'm glad I gave this book another chance.

BR with my lovely ladies momma Karen, Christelle and my monster twin Sheziss :)
The book kept getting better and better and I liked it towards the end but it didn't captivate me as much as I hoped it would. Overall I felt like something was missing and I don't really know what that could possibly be because this book has all the things that I usually love. The whole time I felt rather disconnected and couldn't get into the romance between Jimmy and Shane.
For now, I'm going to blame the intense series I finished just before starting this book for my lack of emotional response. So to not be unfair to the book and the author I decided to read Rattlesnake again in a few months and hold off my rating until then. If that doesn't change my first impression I at least know I gave it a fair chance.

Well I did enjoy this! Normally I prefer a mystery or something as well as the characters but in this the characters were strong enough to carry the story.
Both Shane and Jimmy have hurts - Shane's since a tragic accident 10 years before and Jimmy from living his life. In a way I think Shane's grief is harder to bear as he had such a great life prior to the accident. Jmmy has always been at rock bottom so picking up and starting again is less of an issue.
Shane's optimism is tempered by his physical constraints but he does manage to thaw Jimmy's heart enough that when he lets him go, Jimmy does indeed come back..
I really enjoyed this, though it is a bit of a tear jerker.

Loved it! Wisdom does not come with age. Shane has a broken body but not a broken spirit. When Jimmy stops in town, a latent spark flicks between them and attraction grows. Little by little Jimmy starts to trust, starts to believe he can find happiness. He has the broken spirit and bit by bit Shane starts to mend it - but is the glue strong enough when Shane finds Jimmy's reason for stopping at Rattlesnake?

Favourite quote: "I wasn't almost killed in an accident, Shane." Shane looked at him, then dropped his eyes to the dishtowel he was twisting tight. "Maybe not", he said quietly. "Doesn't mean nothing broke you, though." He put down the towel and left.

One of those stories where you figure out the entire plot after the first couple of chapters, but you still end up a weeping mess at the end. Can't recommend this enough. A masterpiece of m/m romance.

The relationship development here is LOVELY. Nobody is confusing orgasms with true love, so even though they're sleeping together pretty quickly, the emotional attachment is slow and true. It's a really beautiful story. Both MCs have some serious pain in their pasts, but it's not something either of them dwell on, so it never becomes overwhelming. I did choke up a couple of times, but we get their stories in bits and pieces to keep it manageable.
The focus is very much on who they are today. I really appreciated that neither of them are male models -- or even worse, male models that the author is pretending aren't male models for some reason -- and I was relieved to see them argue like the mature adults they are. They don't suddenly get mean and lash out at each other's weaknesses; they remain the honest, straightforward men you've fallen in love with. And there's still plenty of conflict and pain because real life and the human psyche will provide that just fine without OTT drama.

Heartbreaking and beautiful
Such a beautiful story of finding home. The characters are skillfully rendered, and the plot is so well paced - I never felt like it dragged, or needed more drama.
I think this story will stick with me a while.
