Perhaps I've merely outgrown the series, but I didn't love this one. There are certainly some interesting concepts to the book, but it overall failed to capture my interest or emotional investment in the characters and situation of the plot. It felt like the coauthor was more interested in exploring and expanding the series' lore as a method of finding something new to tell a story about in the world than they were in providing a book that stands on its own merit.
This was a good extra book to the Reckoners story line, while still allowing their story to continue in a strange and interesting way.
The new main character is sort of a Mary Sue, but Sanderson goes into a lot of detail to show how and why he got that way, instead of just having him be a superhero. I liked the relationship he had with his older brother. I liked how unique Lux was as well.

Steelheart was the first Brandon Sanderson book I read, so it holds a special place in my heart. To really get this book you need to have at least read Steelheart, if not the entire first trilogy.
Lux follows a different Reckoner team in Texas as they try to fight a different band of Epics. Jax is the central character to the story and gets the most PoV time. An Epic killed his brother when he was ten, Prof found him and sent him to the Coop to be raised and trained. He grew up pushing himself to the limit and now it is time to go to war.
This is a solid story. With the different PoVs and present/past jumps the characters unfold. I really liked Jax, he is smart and motivated. He has spent his life training to fight and now it is time. It just is harder than he ever thought it would be. He is going to lose people he loves, he is going to be betrayed and he is going to have to bury some grudges if he is going to make it through.
I liked there are a couple Easter Eggs in the story for fans of the series and Steelheart's origin story. The city of Lux is both a paradise and a parasite. It shows a strange dichotomy of what people are willing to overlook so they can have some comforts. I really liked exploring the motivator technology too and how it worked with Epic DNA.
The ending was a bit of a surprise since I thought this would only be one book, but it looks like there will be at least one follow-up book. While I missed some of the crew from the original series, there were a lot of likeable characters and Jax makes a pretty great hero.
This is a book for fans of the original series and shouldn't be missed if you loved the Supervillian dystopian world of the Reckoners.

Very solid book. I never read any of the others reckoners books and had no problem understanding how everything happened. Loved the characters and felt sorrow for them also. These characters are put through the ringers throughout this book. I already want the next book as soon as possible to continue.

Fiction Bingo Board ~ A book set in your home state
Rating: 3.5
A new Reckoner's novel, with a whole brand new set of Reckoners down in Texas. I definitely wasn't sure what to expect when I went into this novel. I loved the new set of people, and it was nice not to have the overblown metaphors being used by our main character from the first trilogy. I definitely squealed at the first appearance of Prof, references to the main Reckoners crew, and then definitely when Calamity vanished (telling us exactly where in the timeline everything matched up to).
I'm not sure how I feel about
