"but who can control the capricious fragments of memory?" - my favourite line

Mind's Eye is a crime novel that follows chief Inspector Veeteren as he investigates the murder of a woman, who was drowned in her own bathtub. As the investigation works through its course, more murders are uncovered. You find out about some dark family secrets that may make your skin crawl.
This book was recommended to me by Goodreads, based on my read in 2020 shelf. I had borrowed the audiobook from my library using the Libby app on my phone. The narrator did really well, but for whatever reason, the story just didn't draw me in. I wasn't hanging off of every word that the narrator was saying. I think if I had read it physically I might have enjoyed it more.

Quick read...i struggled a little with following the story, but tbat could be due to translation. An ok book.
dark sad tense slow-paced

I am not one for translated stories but gave it a shot because I really liked the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series, however I just couldn't stay with this book. It had a lot of larger words as well as language that was hard for me to follow. I sometimes was lost and felt it was unclear as to which character I was then reading about. I wasn't able to stay focused or really get into the book, I read about 2/3 and couldn't finish it.

I finished this book and the ending was weird. In the end I think they caught the killer, but the way it was written made me question if they really caught the right person.

Ardea, mocnit.

I picked this up from the library in my foray for some new authors to read. This is the first in a translated to English from Swedish series.

Anyway, I really liked Inspector Van Veeteren or maybe I just identified with him. He is kept on the job simply because he is really good at what he does. He is not there out of any particular passion for it or a drive to succeed. He is like a dog with bone, when things don’t seem to jive with the case, he just keeps working at it. Uncovering clue after clue and following them up.

I love atmospheric mysteries like this one. The dark mood really immerses me in the story. The husband accused of the crime and seemingly unwilling or unable to help himself is a very different character than one usually encountered and his lawyer seems almost a touch humours with his frustration with his client.

The book was a very quick and easy read and was not really that graphic. We get descriptions of the crime scene(s) and the beginning of an attack, but no excessive gore or violence. The plot ties together a series of tragedies in the end very neatly.

My only issue with the book was that I knew very early on who the killer was and what had happened. I don’t want to give a spoiler her so I can’t really discuss how, other than to say I spent my middle school years reading a very trashy series of novels (which are once again popular now for some reason) that sort of ran along these lines.

Overall, I will read more of Inspector Van Veeteren’s investigations as they come available.

This Nordic mystery introduces us to inspector van vetreen , a veteran police officer with ten years of service remaining. Suffice to say, we have an experienced inspector and his experience is shown by the way he deals the case and the procedure he follows. An interesting aspect is author gives equal importance to his team and team work for cracking the case.
The writing is sub par compared to the other Nordic thrillers, probabably because of the translation. It is a good whodunit mystery, on a darker side though
