I haven't cried so much while reading a book in a very long time. Honeybee is devastating and joyful and heartbreaking and exhilarating. This is what good fiction does: allows us to inhabit another's skin, climb inside their head, feel each blush, every heart-stopping panic attack, all the blows, and all the heartache. And we get to feel the hope.

This book is absolutely heartbreaking. I don't want to give anything away but everyone should give this a read. 11/10

The best book I've read all year. If you have this in your "to read" pile, pick it up and start. It's beautiful.

What I will say about this book is that I don’t think it’s written for trans or lgbtq+ people. I think it’s written as an inroads for those outside the community to begin to understand the experience at a beginner level. It’s a way to challenge those who might never normally pick up a book exploring this subject matter to look at trans characters/people with more empathy and nuance.

Both my cis, straight, relatively uneducated (on this particular issue) brother and father read it. Both were absolutely moved by it and motivated to continue researching the trans experience and were able to talk about transgender people with more consideration after. Both also told me they had no idea before reading it where it was going, but by the end absolutely adored the protagonist and her journey. Both were excited for me to read it, excited to share with me that they’d picked up an lgbtq+ book and read it. Baby steps and all of that, I think it definitely did its job.

Despite some of its limitations, one of the most moving books I’ve ever read. Heartbreaking and very triggering in parts, definitely proceed with caution, but really beautiful. Not a perfect narrative, not as nuanced as some, but perfect for its objective.

My favourite book of the year so far. I will definitely reread at some point. Fantastic story telling which allowed me to connect with each character on such a deep level.

This book made me feel deeply! It covered some tough topics and in parts it got really gritty but the writing was so amazing, it reminded me a lot of a Tim Winton book.

From the blurb on the back I had a very different idea of what the story was actually about, but I was hooked within the first chapter.

I thought the ending was perfect and exactly what should be manifested out into the world.
