Oh Mrs. Moore, oh sweet Ms. Beth...you and your teaching were fixtures in my life at a certain point. I love/d you dearly as a female mentor in the denomination of my childhood. I got fed up with the SBC long before you did but I'm so glad you're in our corner now - those females who never fit the stereotype into which the SBC wanted us to mold ourselves. I hope you realize how many of us there are out here who will cheer you on as you join us here on the other side of "complimentarianism" - which is really just a fancy way of trying to put a "complimentary" spin on subjugation.

I'm sorry the place where you found refuge never helped you when your family was crumbling. I'm sorry the church you knew and loved couldn't love and know you back, not fully. You've been giving out love, hugs, and prayer for so many decades and it meant nothing to too many in the end. You've done what is good and right and you are love.

Obviously this review is very personal to me as it became just an open letter to the author but it's just all so close to me. I didn't know the details she hadn't previously shared, of course, but none of it shocked me. None of what was kept hidden from public view shocks me - things like sex abuse and mental illness - aren't things the SBC churches would want to address out in the open. Those are things that go shoved into the corner, known by as few as possible, so that those walking through them get to struggle alone, most often with the poor advice of pastors untrained in how to truly provide assistance. So even without knowing the details, I know her story. I know so many women who have lived and are still living this story and it makes my heart hurt. I hope they read this memoir and take the time to find something new in their hearts.
