#MMD 2023 Spring Book Preview
Vera Wang is a lonely widow living in San Francisco’s Chinatown. She wakes up one morning to find a dead body on the floor of her little tea shop. Vera decides to start her own investigation into the incident. This novel weaves the relationships between a cast of quirky characters in a way that slowly reveals their true motivations. Just like Sutanto’s “Auntie books” this book is a fun cozy mystery that will appeal to most fans of the genre.

Without reading the blurb at the back, the title caught my eye because for a moment I thought it would be a novel where our protagonist Vera Wong would be this morally grey character who would actually give advice on how to get away with murder or something.
Turns out that the book that I was expecting to be dark was actually very wholesome. The portrayal of Vera Wong was so good that I would forget I am reading about Vera and not my grandma. Despite the climax being predictable, it was fun to see some characters turn from being annoyed by Vera to slowly warm up to her.
Honestly, this book would have been better if there were no multiple PoVs that actually destroyed the element of mystery since you get to see incidents from other character's perspective apart from the one investigating.
I would recommend this book to people who have just started (or planning to start) reading mystery or thrill, or to people who want a quick and easy read because of its pacing.
I wouldn't recommend this book if you are looking for a hardcore mystery or if you are well read in this genre because trust me, you need to pay a little attention to find out who the culprit is.
Oh and I learnt a lot about tea and different Asian cuisines.
