The above is why I didn't enjoy this. I was also annoyed by the book because the author didn't bother with a lot of research. Or, if she did, then she didn't want to let it get in the way of conveying misery to her audience. Aspects of the climate apocalypse didn't make sense (almost all insects have disappeared, but that has some how not led to complete and utter catastrophe--and apparently in the event of the break down of society, staying on a working farm where you can produce food is a bad idea and one should instead just wander with no goal in mind?). Also, despite the books focus on a species of wild horses across 3 timelines, the text makes any number of errors about the animals.
It didn't help that one of the narrators of the audiobook narrates in peak 'bored literary reader' voice.

As for this book, it was okay. There were parts I liked a lot, and parts that dragged and were a struggle for me to get through. I was expecting more direct connections between the three storylines. As it is they're all very separate and isolated from each other outside of the horses.

I did like the end. Not really tempted to read the first 2 books though.
