harsh rural life in wyoming, the nature and background of who settled there first was good. the nature really enthralled
me to keep reading, such beautiful things in life.

Wished for a little more substance in these. Great character sketches, nice snapshot of place, but didn't quite do it.

3.5 stars. Picked this up from the library as I wanted to read more by Annie Proulx but didn't find much in the English language sections. Even though this is a short story collection I quite enjoyed it. It was intresting enough but I hope I can find something with a longer stories for the future. I don't know much about her works and don't know if she writes longer fiction but I'll do a quick search later to find out

Reading these western-american short stories made me realize how different a rural lifestyle could be (Proulx wrote the short story that inspired "Brokeback Mountain," in case you were wondering who she is). Some cool magical realism (or "hyperrealism" if you are a snooty), and a few unpredictable female characters. Proulx can overdo the imagery but is usually tasteful.
